India’s Big Green Goal: Can We Reach Net-Zero by 2070?
by Anchal Srivastava

In 2015, India made a massive promise to the world: to reach "Net-Zero" emissions by 2070. This means that by 2070, any greenhouse gases India puts into the atmosphere will be balanced out by the amount it takes away.
It’s a bold plan, especially since India is currently the world’s third-largest emitter and is working hard to grow its economy. So, how do we get there? Let's break down the plan and the challenges ahead. India stands at a defining crossroads in its history—balancing rapid economic growth with an equally ambitious climate commitment. The pledge to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070, announced at COP26, is not just a climate goal—it’s a transformation of the country’s entire economic, energy, and social fabric.

India's journey toward Net Zero by 2070 is a transformative opportunity to redefine development, ensuring prosperity, resilience, and sustainability. Achieving this ambitious goal requires systemic shifts across sectors, innovative governance, and robust financial mechanisms. Key strategies include:
India’s energy demand is expected to grow 2.1–2.6 times by 2070, with electricity’s share rising to 60% under the Net Zero Scenario. Green hydrogen, energy storage, and renewables will play a central role, alongside international cooperation and predictable climate finance.
Achieving Net Zero requires USD 22.7 trillion by 2070, with a financing gap of USD 6.53 trillion. Mobilizing domestic and foreign capital, reducing the cost of capital, and scaling investments are critical. The transition will create 7 million energy-sector jobs by 2050, but reskilling and targeted policies are essential to ensure equitable outcomes. India’s Net Zero journey is an opportunity to redefine development, combining economic vitality, technological leadership, and sustainability.
India isn't waiting until 2070 to start. There are big targets set for as early as 2030:
The Reality Check: What Stands in Our Way?

While the goal is possible, there are some serious "bottlenecks" or hurdles to clear:
Why This is Actually a Huge Opportunity
Reaching Net-Zero isn't just about the environment; it’s about building a better future for India, often called Viksit Bharat (Developed India).
Conclusion
The journey to 2070 is a "delicate balancing act". India is trying to do something no other major economy has done: grow its wealth eightfold in one generation while completely changing its energy system to be green.
It won’t be easy, and it will require everyone—from the government to big businesses and everyday citizens—to change how they think about energy and resources. But if we succeed, India won't just be greener—it will be a global leader in the new green economy.
